Why should I send my horse blankets for professional cleaning and care?

It’s a worthwhile investment in the longevity of your blankets. Consider this:

  • A new high-quality blanket costs about $500.

  • Without cleaning and proper care, you'd have to replace it after 2 years—totaling $2,500 over 10 years.

  • On the other hand, cleaning, waterproofing, and repairing each year only costs around $75 per year, adding up to only $1,250 for 10 years.

That’s a savings of $1,250 just by keeping up with regular maintenance!

How can I tell if my blanket is waterproof?

A properly waterproofed blanket will make water form small beads on the fabric's surface. If the water is absorbed into the blanket, it means the waterproofing has failed, which could leave your horse cold and damp—something that can lead to dangerous body heat loss.

Can I wash and waterproof my blankets on my own?

Yes, but it can be more challenging than it seems:

  • Washing: Many laundromats may not allow horse blankets because they can damage machines or disrupt their regular use.

  • Detergents: Regular detergents can damage the fabric and affect your horse’s skin.

  • Waterproofing products: Nikwax and other products tend to be expensive when purchased in small quantities, and using them properly requires time and attention to detail.

In the end, the time and cost you’d spend on doing it yourself often match what you would pay to have a professional handle it for you.

How long should my horse blankets last?

With proper care, horse blankets should last anywhere from 10 to 15 years. Without maintenance, they usually last only about 5 years. Regular cleaning, waterproofing, and repair can help you get the most out of your investment.

Can I send my blankets in for repairs without washing them?

We require that all blankets be washed first before we can begin any repairs. This ensures that your blanket is properly cleaned and ready for the best possible repair outcome.
